Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C). While it heats, place the stick of butter in a 9×13-inch baking dish and put it in the oven to melt. Keep an eye on it — you want the butter fully melted but not browned.
Prepare the Batter: In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and a dash of salt. Gradually add the milk, stirring just until combined. The batter should be smooth and pourable — no need to overmix.
Assemble the Cobbler: Once the butter has melted, carefully remove the pan from the oven. Pour the batter directly over the melted butter — do not stir. This layering is what creates the “self-rising” cobbler crust as it bakes.
Add the Peaches: Spoon the sliced peaches evenly over the batter, spreading them out so each bite has plenty of fruit. For extra flavor, drizzle about ¼ cup of the peach syrup over the top. The syrup adds a little caramelized sweetness and keeps the cobbler moist.
Bake: Place the dish in the oven and bake for about 1 hour, or until the top is golden brown and bubbling around the edges. As it bakes, the batter will rise up and over the peaches, forming a beautifully golden crust that’s crisp on top and tender underneath.
Cool and Serve: Remove the cobbler from the oven and allow it to cool slightly before serving. This gives the juices time to settle and the crust to set just right.
